Experienced Defense Lawyer Handles Traffic Tickets in Los Angeles

Representing California residents since 2003

If you receive a citation for speeding, reckless driving or any other traffic offense, you should consult with a lawyer. Traffic tickets can add points to your license, which affects your insurance premiums and your ability to drive. When you seek the assistance of the Law Offices of Arash Hashemi, we act quickly to challenge your traffic ticket.

How the point system works in California

Every driver in Los Angeles and throughout the state starts out with a clean record. When you receive a ticket, depending on the offense, points are added to your record. Accumulating points can eventually lead to a license suspension or revocation.

Here’s a list of the points assessed for common traffic offenses:

  • Speeding — one point
  • Running a red light — one point
  • Unsafe lane change — one point
  • Reckless driving — two points
  • Driving while on a suspended or revoked license — two points
  • Hit-and-run accident — two points
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol — two points

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) may suspend or revoke your license if you receive:

  • Four points within 12 months
  • Six points within 24 months
  • Eight points within 36 months

What is the difference between a license suspension and revocation?

If your license is suspended, you temporarily lose your driving privileges for a specified period of time. A license revocation, on the other hand, is the cancellation of your license. You are entitled to a hearing if the DMV suspends or revokes your license. After a period specified in the suspension or revocation order, you may apply for a new license.

How points are eliminated

If you have points on your record for minor driving infractions, it takes about three years to have them removed. However, points for DUI or for a hit and run remain on your record for 10 years. Failure to appear in traffic court for any type of violation remains on your driving record for five years.
